Zusammenfassung
US-amerikanische Parteien gelten immer noch als die große Ausnahme im Vergleich mit ihren europäischen Pendants: Demokraten und Republikaner sind keine organisationsstarken Mitgliederparteien, sie agieren primär als Wahlkampfvehikel und gewinnen ihr Selbstbewusstsein nicht aus intensiv erarbeiteten Parteiprogrammen. Gleichzeitig jedoch zeigt sich ein anderes Bild: Das Parteiensystem ist stark polarisiert, die ideologischen Unterschiede zwischen Demokraten und Republikanern treten so deutlich wie nie in der jüngeren Geschichte des Landes hervor. Und schließlich sind beide Parteiorganisationen heute finanziell sehr gut ausgestattet und in ein dichtes Netzwerk von Beratern, Wahlkampfinitiativen und Interessengruppen eingewoben. Dieses Netzwerk ermöglicht es ihnen aktuell, eine neue organisatorische Stärke zu entwickeln und eine tiefere gesellschaftliche Verankerung als noch vor wenigen Jahrzehnten zu erreichen.
