General Overview
Brazil has considerable geological potential. Historically, the country was a large producer of diamonds in the seventeenth century and of gold in the eighteenth century. At present, the country produces more than 80 mineral substances, being an important global player in some of those commodities. According to the Brazilian Mining Agency (“Agência Nacional de Mineração” – ANM, which is in process of being established in replacement for the “Departamento Nacional de Produção Mineral,” DNPM), in 2016, Brazil was the largest world producer of niobium (90% of the world production), the second largest producer of iron ore (17.5%), and the third largest producer of bauxite (13.2%).
Furthermore, the country has significant reserves of niobium (95.3% of the world reserves), rare earths (18.3%), nickel (12.8%), tin (14.9%), iron ore (13.5%), and manganese (16.8%), based on the statistics of the DNPM/ANM and of the US Geological Survey. The total mineral production in 2017 was...
