Lebanon, with an estimated population of 5.2 million and area of 10,452 km2 (4014 mi2), stretches about 210 km along the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It borders Syria to the north and east and Palestine and Israel to the south. Lebanon’s competitive and free-market economy (est. US$53 billion GDP in 2019) has historically relied on tourism, which remains a major source of growth and employment. According to the WTTC (2020), travel and tourism contributed $10.52 billion (about 18%) to Lebanon’s GDP, directly and indirectly supporting 434,200 jobs (19.2% of total employment; WTTC 2020) (Fig. 1).
