Zusammenfassung

Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg schufen die Vereinigten Staaten gemeinsam mit anderen Partnern eine Nachkriegsordnung mit umfangreichen neuen Sicherheits- und Wirtschaftsinstitutionen. Die zentrale Rolle der USA in dieser institutionellen Ordnung ist nicht nur ein Ausdruck, sondern auch eine Quelle für ihre Vormachtstellung. Die leitende Rolle der USA wird derzeit stark in Frage gestellt. Amerikas Ambivalenz gegenüber dem liberalen Internationalismus ist allerdings keine neue Erscheinung; vielmehr stellt die Spannung zwischen Unilateralismus und Multilateralismus ein entscheidendes Merkmal der amerikanischen Außenpolitik dar.
