Zusammenfassung
Seit dem letzten Drittel des 20. Jahrhunderts haben sich wichtige Merkmale der amerikanischen Sozialstruktur verändert. Hierzu gehört insbesondere die Herausforderung des demografischen Wandels, der sich in der Erwerbs- und Beschäftigungsstruktur bemerkbar macht und etwa gegenüber der alternden Bevölkerung soziale und gesundheitspolitische Maßnahmen verlangt. Die Entwicklung zu einer zunehmenden und sich in den Sozialschichten verfestigenden Einkommens- und Vermögensungleichheit berührt den Kern des amerikanischen Selbstverständnisses von Chancengleichheit und der Möglichkeit vom sozialen Aufstieg.
