Zusammenfassung

Der politische Umgang mit dem Thema Immigration steht in den USA in einem Spannungsverhältnis zwischen einem Selbstverständnis als Einwanderernation, wirtschaftlichen Interessen und xenophobischen Tendenzen. So fördert Washington einerseits die Einwanderung, hat aber andererseits dabei immer wieder einzelne Gruppen aufgrund ihrer nationalen Herkunft diskriminiert. Dennoch sind die USA auch am Anfang des 21. Jahrhunderts das beliebteste Auswanderungsziel weltweit. Mit zunehmendem politischem Gewicht der Einwanderer wächst die Chance, die lang diskutierte Reform der Einwanderungspolitik zu verwirklichen.
