Early Life and Educational Background

Lanning was born in Oakland on October 18, 1956, as one of five siblings. An older brother Ian would volunteer for service in Vietnam. Another, Stan, would become a mathematician and computer scientist known for his development of the Netflix Prize. Two younger sisters, Lisa and Valentina, achieved their own successes despite growing up in a family and at a time in which there was lip service about feminism, but in which the females nonetheless served traditional domestic roles. There was a similar tension between actions and words on issues of race: Despite the fact that Oakland (though not their neighborhood) was ethnically diverse, and despite the fact that Lanning’s mother was a jazz/blues singer before having children (her stage name was Toni Aubin, and her voice and temperament channeled Billie Holliday), and despite the fact that their house was frequently visited by artists, musicians, writers, and hangers-on, there was a complete absence...
