Definition

Lewis Terman was an early twentieth century psychologist who conducted pioneering research in several areas, including the use of longitudinal studies, the development of standardized cognitive tests, and the study of high IQ individuals.

Introduction

Lewis Terman (1877–1956) was arguably one of the most influential psychologists in history (Winkler and Jolly 2013). He helped pioneer psychometric testing, longitudinal study methodology, and research on intelligence. At the time of his death, he was considered the father of and authority on gifted education, a field that studies highly capable children and their educational needs (Sears et al. 1957). This work is still visible today in various forms, including the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Test (it is only referred to as “Stanford” because that is where Terman worked at the time when he developed it) and his continued importance in the fields of gifted education (Jolly 2004) and intelligence research (Feldhusen 2003)....
