Introduction

When published in 1859, On the Origin of Species received a cool reception in Canada, owing to reservations of the nation’s most renowned nineteenth-century scholars, including J. W. Dawson, Principal of McGill College, and D. Wilson, Professor, University College, Toronto (Zeller 1998). The latter, a historian, artist, early archaeologist, and anthropologist coined the term “prehistory” (Trigger 1966). As its first president, he set the University of Toronto on the road to success and international renown.
