Introduction
Israel Zwerling was a psychiatrist, educator, and advocate for community-based mental health, initiating the use of day treatment programs over hospitalization for those with mental illness. Zwerling was influential in integrating family work into mental health treatment and in the creation and stewardship of early family therapy training programs. Zwerling also advocated for the use of creative arts in therapy.
Career
Zwerling graduated with a B.S. and M.S. from City College and earned a Ph.D. in Psychology from Columbia University. He received his medical degree in 1950 from Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. He was a lecturer at Yale University and faculty at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University and Bronx State Hospital. In 1973, he became chairperson of the department of Mental Health Sciences at Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital in Philadelphia, later becoming dean of the School of Medicine.
