Algeria is located in Northern Africa between Morocco and Tunisia, bordering the Mediterranean Sea, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, and Libya. It is the largest country in Africa covering an area of 2,381,741 km2 (919,595 mi2) (Fig. 1). The population of 43 million in January 2019 (https://www.ons.dz/spip.php?rubrique34) is primarily one Arab-Berber ethnic group (99%). There are three main languages, Arabic (official), French (lingua franca), and Tamazight (Kabylie Berber) as well as other Berber languages (Tachawit, Mozabit, and Tamahaq). Algeria’s economy is dependent on oil, accounting for 60% of budget revenues, 30% of GDP, and over 95% of export earnings (https://www.forbes.com/places/algeria/?sh=45739cc7543e).
