Definition
Family-centered care is an approach to care that is based on the understanding that the family is a child’s primary source of strength and support (American Academy of Pediatrics 2012). As such, the family is recognized as an integral part of the team in collaboration with service providers to best support the care of the child. Service providers view the family as a unit that includes the child, and this unit is the primary focus of care (Coyne et al. 2018). The family unit may include parents, extended family, and/or other caregivers who are determined to be most meaningful and supportive to the child in time of need (Baas 2012).
