Abstract
The mitochondrial carnitine palmitoyltransferase (CPT) system of enzymes permits the entry of long-chain acyl groups into the mitochondrial matrix, the site of β-oxidation. First conceptualized as a mechanism for mitochondrial fatty acid transport almost four decades ago (1,2), this multicomponent enzyme/transporter system is now recognized to play a primary role in the regulation of mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation and, hence, constitutes a critical control point in cellular lipid metabolism (3–5).
