Abstract

DNA microarrays have indicated that significant gene expression changes following global cerebral ischemia occur, and that neurotherapeutic strategies may specifically impact RNA expression in ischemic cells. Thus, the assessment of specific RNA species may provide an integral aspect to understanding the molecular effects of global cerebral ischemia and therapeutic strategies. We present here a brief discussion of RNA assessments following global ischemia, and describe two of the basic techniques, northern blotting and in situ hybridization, keeping in mind the specific context of global cerebral ischemic brain injury.
