Renal function impairment in swelling with and without anoxia

Abstract

As improvement in organ preservation has been obtained with hyperosmolar solutions, it has been deduced that inhibition of cellular swelling was beneficial, and that cellular swelling was one of the major pathways leading to cellular death. Disruption of cellular architecture and spatial separation of key enzymes are the suspected mechanisms. If this is the case, swelling in absence of anoxia should produce the same defects as anoxia. We have therefore attempted to produce similar swelling by flushing kidneys with hypotonic solutions or by submitting them to normothermic anoxia. The effects on glomerular function tested immediately or after 24 h were markedly different according to the origin of the oedema.
