Abstract
There is a widely held assumption that the appeal of novelty, the rewards of discovery and the beauty of artistic expression provide their own rewards and constitute a claim for the human capacity for goodness. In celebrating these contributions to our lives, we seldom examine the possibility that such a creative contribution can also pose a serious threat to our very survival. In this chapter, we explore the ethics of choices that accompanied creative contributions in three different historical settings.
