Cultural Compatibility in International Acquisitions

  • Chapter
International Business Organization

Part of the book series: The Academy of International Business ((AIB))

Abstract

Recent years have seen a marked increase in international acquisition activity (Hamill and Castledine, 1996) as firms pursue a simultaneous strategy of business consolidation and geographical diversification (Taggart and McDermott, 1993). Indeed, cross-border acquisitions by UK firms have shown a rising trend over the past five years in terms of both numbers and values (see Figure 17.1). In 1996, Corporate UK invested £35 billion in such deals, accounting for over half of our total acquisition activity (data source: Acquisitions Monthly).
