Abstract
Awake thoracic surgery encompasses usage of various local or regional anesthesia techniques, with or without sedation, in patients undergoing surgical or diagnostic procedures with open or video-assisted thoracoscopic technique, who are breathing on their own and are also cooperative during the procedure [1]. Technically awake thoracic surgery is more challenging for the anesthesiologist and surgeon, than when general anesthesia is used for the surgery. However, this method can be of great benefit to the patients, as the normal physiology of a patient in terms of cardiopulmonary, neurologic, and muscular systems is maintained while complications of general anesthesia, tracheal intubation, one-lung ventilation, and prolonged mechanical ventilation are avoided, thus reducing the postoperative complications, providing better pain relief and enhanced recovery, particularly in high-risk patients [2].
