Abstract

In chapter two I established the field for my research into permanent exclusion from school as a ‘policy community’. I also described schools as microcosms of society (Lawrence-Lightfoot 2003), reflecting more general societal concerns and implementing state policy, and therefore suitable for the investigation of wider conceptions of the relationship between the state and the individual.
