The 1828–1829 Earthquake Sequence in the Provinces of Alicante and Murcia (S-E Spain): Historical Sources and Macroseismic Intensity Assessment

The Use of Historical Data in Natural Hazard Assessments

Part of the book series: Advances in Natural and Technological Hazards Research ((NTHR,volume 17))

Abstract

This paper examines an early 19th century earthquake sequence in south-eastern Spain, with the aim of improving the knowledge of its effects going back to coeval, original historical sources. The strongest event of the sequence occurred on 21 March 1829 and it destroyed some villages of the coastal area south of Alicante as well as some located along the valley of the río Segura. Four villages had then to be completely rebuilt. Effects of the main shock were estimated according to EM98 scale. A maximum intensity of 10 EMS98 was assessed; in all, a homogeneous set of about 60 intensity data points is made available and may be used for a new, more stable evaluation of the parameters of the earthquake.
