Abstract

A potential complement to static studies of high-pressure phase equilibria, supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) may become a rapid technique for estimation of the solute partial molar properties in dilute supercritical mixtures. The principal obstacle in reaching this goal is the poorly understood effect on solute retention of the sorption of supercritical fluid into the stationary phase. In this contribution, recent theoretical results in modeling this effect are reviewed, and the ensuing challenges in both theory and experiment are identified.
