Liability for Independent Contractors

This was the subject of lively debate throughout the 1960s. A reform propagated by the British shipowners at the Stockholm Conference of the C.M.I. of 19631 has yet to receive diplomatic approval. Opposition has come largely from the Continent where the matter has received much less attention than in Anglo-Saxon countries. The debate came to life with the decision of the House of Lords in Riverstone Meat Co. Pty. v. Lancashire Shipping Co.2 known as The Muncaster Castle.
