Abstract
Insofar as the internal and external infrastructures needed to sustain surface mount technology are not yet fully developed, SMT is in a transition phase. Clearly a good internal infrastructure (process and design rule development, validation, documentation, and training and development of manufacturing capability) is necessary to develop and sustain the technology. The internal infrastructure is especially important, and it is management’s task to understand the technical issues and put the resources in place to develop it.
