Abstract

The present paper focuses on the qualitative and quantitative changes in zooplankton composition on the western Black Sea area on the basis of long term data (1970–1995 period). The results reveal a decreasing tendency in diversity of mesozooplankton as well as a slight increase in total zooplankton biomass. The investigations of the ecological status of some zooplankton species (Noctiluca scintilans, Mnemiopsis leidyi), including their adaptation, give some grounds to consider them as potential bioindicators in the high eutrophication zones.
