Abstract

For more than 30 years, observational epidemiologic studies have investigated whether elevated levels of plasma triglyceride are associated with increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). The results of these studies, however, have not been consistent, and controversy still exists as to the significance of the association. Thus, despite an extensive literature and two NIH workshops (18,20), the status of hypertriglyceridemia as a risk factor is still uncertain.
