Abstract

Gold nanostructures deposited in an STM configuration by voltage pulsing are produced by mechanical contact between tip and sample. The contact resistance shows discrete jumps which are indicative of atomic rearrangements and in the last stage of quantum conductance. By elongating the contacts we are able to form metallic wire of atomic cross section and longer than 400 Å. Long and narrow wires show resistances that cannot be explained by metallic conduction.
