Abstract

About 45 % of the total worldwide production of 35 million tons of technical industrial carbon (excluding metallurgical coke) comprise bulk carbon and graphite materials [1,2]. By far, the largest share (15 million tons) is used for electrodes in the aluminum and steel industry and only 30,000 tons are produced in the field of fine grained carbon materials. But, nevertheless, these are essential in modem technologies as the outstanding principal properties of carbon and graphite can be tailored to a multitude of applications, depending upon specific modifications of the manufacturing process. The outstanding characteristic properties and selected applications of these materials are listed in tables 1 and 2.
