Abstract
Extracellular Ca2+ levels in blood and other biological fluids can be sensed by cells of the Ca2+ homeostatic system that possess a G protein-coupled receptor (GPR) known as the extracellular calcium-sensing receptor (CaR). The discovery that extracellular Ca2+ (Ca 2+0 ) can invoke intracellular signaling responses similarly to GPR agonists such as epinephrine and vasopressin, has revealed that, in addition to being a fundamental intracellular second messenger, Ca2+ also represents an important extracellular “first” messenger in its own right.
