Abstract

Lung cancer is the largest cancer killer of men and women. In addition to the progress made from anti smoking campaigns, new tools to diagnose and treat patients are emerging which have made rapid advances in the knowledge of molecular pathogenesis of lung cancer. These tools have started to provide an insight into how the tumor cell, by altering oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes, achieves growth advantage, uncontrolled proliferation and metastatic behaviour. Now knowledge is being gathered in terms of the molecular definition of individual susceptibility to tobacco smoke carcinogens. This review summarizes current knowledge of the molecular pathogenesis of lung cancer.
