Abstract

This chapter is aimed at describing how mathematics teaching is done at middle school level. What is the type of relationships established between students, between students and teacher and between all these people and the mathematical objects ‘at stake’? The chapter attempts to identify current practices on the basis of international studies and results of research. It sheds a little light on very widespread practices while at the same time giving a place to practices that are rarer at global level, but which may well become more widespread in the future. Mathematics lessons as well as assessment practices are analysed. The influence of institutional characteristics is discussed. The teaching of equations has been chosen to illustrate two types of practices.
