Abstract

Many millions of poultry are reared for egg and meat production in the Netherlands every year. These birds usually spend their entire life in an indoor environment where the risk of infection (“infection pressure”) is always high. Keeping large numbers of birds under such conditions would not be possible without adequate prophylaxis against several infectious diseases. For this reason active immunization plays a major part in the veterinary care of the poultry stock.
