Abstract

Dietary advice for the general population should include encouragement to eat a great variety of fruit and vegetables, more starchy foods such as potatoes, rice, bread and pasta, and more oil-rich fish. Regular, light drinking should also be encouraged in men aged over 40 years and in post-menopausal women. Advice should also be given to eat more reduced fat rather than full-fat dairy products and full-fat meat products, and to use less salt. Special emphasis should be put on the importance of enjoying all food and eating a wide variety of different foods.
