Abstract
Een zelfstandig mens is niet alleen iemand die op eigen kracht dingen kan dóen. Minstens even belangrijk is dat hij of zij zelf kan oordelen wat in bepaalde situaties goed en wat fout is om te doen. Niet ‘goed of fout’ in de zin van wat het beste effect oplevert, maar in de morele betekenis. Dat innerlijk besef noemt men geweten. Het betekent niet dat je je altijd in overeenstemming met de normen van dat geweten gedraagt. Voor dat verschijnsel bestaan verschillende omschrijvingen waarvan ‘de geest is gewillig, maar het vlees is zwak’ wel de bekendste is. Je wéét wel hoe het moet, maar weten en doen is twee. Gedraag je je niet volgens je eigen geweten, dan krijg je last van schuldgevoel. Je geweten gaat knagen. Om dat te voorkomen, probeer je dus als het enigszins kan naar je geweten te luisteren. Het geweten wordt ook wel omschreven als een innerlijk richtsnoer of een kompas. Hoe groeit in kinderen zo’n ingebouwde stem van het geweten, waardoor op den duur niet steeds anderen hen hoeven te wijzen op wat lief is en stout, goed en kwaad? Met name drie aspecten zullen we in dit hoofdstuk behandelen. In de eerste plaats verschillende theorieën over het ontstaan van het geweten. In de tweede plaats wat er aan het gedrag van een opgroeiend kind is te merken van gewetensvorming. En in de derde plaats welke problemen bij de gewetensvorming kunnen rijzen.
