Fino agli anni’ 70 la scena teorica delle emozioni è stata dominata dalla controversia James-Cannon in riferimento all’esperienza emozionale; la diatriba riguardava il rapporto tra sensazioni periferiche — causate dai propri movimenti e dalle proprie reazioni fisiologiche (James-Lange) — e sensazioni di origine centrale nel cervello, nei muscoli e nel cuore (Cannon-Bard). Inoltre tale controversia ha interessato la relazione tra esperienza e risposta emozionale. Per (1884) l’esperienza emozionale non è causa della risposta emozionale, bensì conseguenza; per (1927) l’esperienza emozionale è considerata una delle cause del comportamento emozionale.
