Im vorliegenden Kapitel werden das theoretische Grundmodell der Untersuchung formuliert und die im Rahmen der empirischen Untersuchung zu überprüfende Hypothesen gebildet. Das Modell setzt sich einerseits aus unternehmensspezifischen Faktoren sowie andererseits aus individuellen Faktoren des Unternehmers zusammen und berücksichtigt ebenfalls den Einfluss der Unternehmensstrategie auf den Erfolg. Zunächst werden im nachfolgenden Kapital die strategischen Aktiven des Unternehmens und des Unternehmers definiert, die auf Basis der Theorie als erfolgskritisch eingestuft werden. In anschließenden Kapitel wird die Wettbewerbsstrategie des Unternehmens dargelegt. Der Kontingenz-Ansatz postuliert, dass eine Übereinstimmung von Strategie mit dem Umfeld respektive den unternehmensinternen Ressourcen zu einer besseren Leistung führt. Im letzten Kapital folgt eine Zusammenfassung des theoretischen Grundmodells sowie der konzeptionellen Modellerweiterungen.
