Zusammenfassung
Die Frage nach dem „Warum“ hat seit Menschen Gedenken die Wissenschaft beflügelt, auch im Marketing. Wir versuchen zu verstehen, warumMenschen bestimmte Marken oder Produkte bevorzugen, warum sie sich häufig irrational und nicht wie ein homo oeconomicus verhalten, warum sie einenspezifischen Lebensstil anstreben, andere Lebensstile dagegen vehement ablehnen, warum sie sich durch Medien und Werbekampagnen beeinflussen lassen, auch wenn sie dies nicht zugeben möchten, warum sie beim Einkaufen nicht nur Wert auf Auswahl und Qualität von Waren legen, sondern auch auf unverwechselbare Einkaufserlebnisse, kurzum, Marktforscher versuchen zu ergründen, warum KundInnen sind, wie sie sind. Dabei zeigt sich, dass klassische, standardisierte Interviews oftmals nur an der Oberfläche des Verhaltens „kratzen“ und die wahren Beweggründe für das Konsumverhalten nicht offen legen. Fehleinschätzungen bei der Erfolgsprognose von Produkten und Dienstleistungen sind die Folge. So wurden von deutschen Firmen zunächst die Sinnhaftigkeit von Fax-Geräten und der damit verbundene Nutzen der Übertragungsmöglichkeit von Bildern oder Bildzeichen nicht erkannt, und das in Deutschland erworbene Patent für diese Technologie wurde nach Japan verkauft. Auch der extreme Erfolg von SMS (short messaging services) wurde nicht prognostiziert, hatte man es doch nicht für möglich gehalten, dass sich KonsumentInnen die Mühe machen, auf einer kleinen Handytastatur Buchstabe für Buchstabe Texte zu schreiben.
