Zusammenfassung
Die zunehmende Internationalisierung und Globalisierung der Wirtschaft ist nicht zu übersehen. Die ausgebrochene Weltwirtschaftskrise führt es allzu überzeugend vor Augen. Auch wenn die deutschen Unternehmen einigen Autoren zufolge als die „späten Internationalisierer“ gelten und das vermutete Ausmaß der Internationalität deutscher Wirtschaft häufig höher ist als das tatsächliche, ist das Auslandsgeschäft den deutschen Unternehmen heutzutage oftmals von größerer Bedeutung als das Inlandsgeschäft. Elf Unternehmen deutscher Herkunft werden unter den ‚the world's top 100 transnational corporations' gezählt, darunter Bayer AG, Hoechst AG und BMW AG. Die Internationalisierungsbemühungen reichen längst bis in den deutschen Mittelstand hinein, auch wenn hier eine Polarisierungstendenz zu beobachten ist. Auf der einen Seite sind Unternehmen zu beobachten, die gar nicht oder kaum international agieren, auf der anderen Seite lässt sich aber auch eine Gruppe von mittelständigen Firmen unterscheiden, die in einem ausgeprägten Maße international agieren.
