Performance Measurement hat seit Mitte der 1990er Jahre einen enormen Bedeutungszuwachs erlebt. Während noch im Jahr 1997 weltweit lediglich 200.000 Websites zum Begriff „Performance Measurement“ in Suchmaschinen gefunden wurden, waren es 2007 bereits mehr als 104 Millionen. Neely hat ermittelt, dass seit dem Jahr 1994 alle fünf Stunden eine neue Publikation zu diesem Thema erschienen ist. Zunehmende Wettbewerbsintensität und deutlich gestiegene Transparenzanforderungen der Stakeholder haben dazu geführt, dass jede Organisation mehr und mehr gefordert ist, den Fokus auf Leistung und Leistungssteigerung zu richten. Zahlreiche Unternehmen haben daher in den vergangenen Jahren professionelle Performance Measurement Systeme (PMS) eingeführt. Es hat sich regelrecht ein Hype um geeignete Kennzahlen, stetige Leistungsoptimierung und deren erfolgreiche Verknüpfung mit Anreizsystemen entwickelt. Meyer bezeichnet Performance sogar als das „Mantra der 1990er Jahre“. Doch bei aller Leistungseuphorie sollte man die Worte Einsteins nicht vergessen: „Nicht alles, was zählt, kann gezählt werden und nicht alles, was gezählt werden kann, zählt.“
