Abstract

Almost 125 years after the invention of the automobile by Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz, Daimler AG has become a globally leading automobile manufacturer of premium cars and commercial vehicles with its headquarters in Stuttgart (Germany). Daimler AG documented a revenue of almost EUR 79 billion for the year 2009. As the global financial and economic crisis had a strong impact on the automotive industry in general, Daimler AG recorded a full year EBIT of EUR 1.5 billion and a net loss of EUR 2.6 billion due to high losses in the first half of the year 2009. Because of the very difficult economic environment in 2009, Daimler AG sold 1.6 million vehicles only in comparison to 2.1 million vehicles in the year 2008 (see Table 12.1).
