Zusammenfassung
Noch vor einigen Jahren wäre man von manchen Analysten belächelt worden, hätte man die Großrechnerarchitektur der IBM* – für gewöhnlich als Mainframe bezeichnet – mit dem Jahr 2020 in Verbindung gebracht. Sicherlich existieren auch heute noch etliche Skeptiker, die dem Mainframe jegliche Zukunft absprechen. Pessimistische Prognosen gibt und gab es immer mal wieder in seiner nunmehr über fünfzigjährigen Geschichte. Den größten Bekanntheitsgrad hat dabei wohl die Vorhersage von Stewart Alsop erlangt, der die Abschaltung des letzten Mainframes für das Jahr 1996 prophezeite. Doch er sollte eines Besseren belehrt werden. Acht Jahre später revidierte Alsop seine Aussage und bestätigte den offensichtlich ungebrochenen Bedarf am Markt nach zuverlässigen, zentralen Computersystemen. Genau diesem Bedarf wird der Mainframe vollständig gerecht. Seine Stärken liegen in den Bereichen Sicherheit und Hochverfügbarkeit sowie in seiner außerordentlichen Skalierbarkeit und einer enorm hohen Datentransferleistung. Von seinen Fähigkeiten im Bereich Hochverfügbarkeit leitet sich auch die Bezeichnung der aktuellen Architekturversion des Mainframes ab – System z*. Der Buchstabe z steht dabei für zero downtime wegen seiner bis zu 99,999-prozentigen Verfügbarkeit.
