Zusammenfassung

Das Ende des Kalten Krieges hat die geopolitischen Parameter substanziell verschoben — nach dem Untergang der Sowjetunion und dem Zerfall des Warschauer Paktes existiert nur noch eine einzige Supermacht in Form der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika sowie eine Reihe von regionalen Großmächten. Auch die sicherheitspolitischen Herausforderungen haben sich fundamental verändert — an die Stelle der nuklearen Konfrontation zwischen den Blöcken sind lokale Konflikte getreten, die sich häufig innerhalb von Staatsgrenzen abspielen, sowie die Herausforderung durch global agierende Terroristen.
