Zusammenfassung
Die moderne Bevölkerungsgeschichte Palästinas beginnt Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts mit dem Eintreffen der ersten zionistisch motivierten jüdischen Einwanderer. 1845 lebten in Palästina 11 800 Juden. Am Vorabend der ersten Alija, 1882, waren es 24 000 (Encyclopaedia Hebraica, Bd. Eretz Israel: 674; Friedlander / Goldscheider, 1979: 14; dies sind nur von Experten geschätzte, nicht genau erhobene Daten). Am Vorabend des Ersten Weltkrieges, 1914, waren es 85 000, bei der Volkszählung von 1922 84000, am 15. 5. 1948 650000 und im Dezember 1949, nach dem Unabhängigkeitskrieg, 1 014 000 (ebd.).
