Zusammenfassung
Das Mittelmeer ist das größte von Landmassen völlig umschlossene (Neben-)Meer – allerdings nicht das größte Mittelmeer (vgl. Abb. 1.2 und Tab. 1.1). In seiner heutigen Form und mit seiner heutigen Biozönose ist es erst in den letzten etwas mehr als 5 Mio. Jahren entstanden. Mit einer Fläche von knapp 3 000 000 km2 stellt es – zusammen mit dem Schwarzen Meer – einen Miniaturozean dar (oder eher seine Reste), der gut für biogeographische Betrachtungen geeignet ist.
