Zusammenfassung
Im Juli 1994 schlug der Komet Shoemaker‐Levy 9 auf dem Jupiter ein. Diese Kollision wurde nicht nur von Astronomen beobachtet, sondern fand wegen ihres spektakulären Charakters auch große Aufmerksamkeit in den Medien. Handelte es sich hierbei um eine Naturkatastrophe? Dies würden die meisten Beobachter verneinen. Es war zwar ein Extremereignis mit großen Wirkungen, aber um zur Katastrophe werden zu können, hätte es auf der Erde stattfinden und hätten Menschen davon betroffen sein müssen.
Am 30. Juni 1908 fand im sibirischen Gouvernement Jenisseisk, der heutigen Region Krasnojarsk, eine große Explosion statt, die in Anlehnung an den Namen eines dortigen Flusses als Tunguska‐Ereignis bezeichnet wird. Die Ursache ist bis heute nicht ganz geklärt, doch spricht vieles dafür, dass es sich um den Einschlag eines Asteroiden oder eines Meteors handelte. Die Auswirkungen waren gewaltig. Auf einem Gebiet von 2000 km2 wurden rund 60 Mio. Bäume umgeknickt, und noch in einer Entfernung von 500 km wurde ein Lichtschein beobachtet. Dennoch hat dieses Ereignis unter den Zeitgenossen keine größere Aufmerksamkeit gefunden. Erst durch eine Expedition in den frühen 1920er‐Jahren wurden so viele Informationen bekannt, dass die Neugier der Fachwelt erregt wurde.
