Zusammenfassung
Bei der drahtlosen Fernübertragung über die Erde mit elektromagnetischen Wellen haben wir im Gegensatz zu der Übertragung längs Leitungen mit einem von der Natur in allen seinen Eigenschaften gegebenen Übertragungsweg zu rechnen. Die technische Pionierarbeit der drahtlosen Telegraphie ist in den großen Etappen (etwa lange Wellen, kurze Wellen, Rundfunkwellen, Ultrakurzwellen) ohne eine genaue Vorkenntnis des Übertragungsweges geleistet worden. Erst eine große Summe von praktischen Betriebserfahrungen und praktische und theoretische Forschungsarbeit haben ein immer klareres Bild von den Ausbreitungsvorgängen und den Eigenschaften des Übertragungsweges entstehen lassen, das in seiner Vielseitigkeit auch ein allgemeines Interesse beanspruchen darf. Der Ausbreitungsweg enthält eine Reihe von technischen Möglichkeiten, die heute durch Verwendung aller Wellenlängen und geeigneter Sende- und Empfangsmethoden im wesentlichen als ausgenutzt oder doch als bekannt gelten können. Sie übertreffen bei weitem die ursprünglichen Hoffnungen. Andere Erwartungen, die im Laufe der Entwicklung entstanden, haben sich dagegen nicht in vollem Umfang erfüllt. So wird z. B. der transozeanischen Bildtelegraphie mit kurzen Wellen bezüglich der Telegraphiergeschwindigkeit durch das Vorhandensein von Echoerscheinungen eine Grenze gesetzt.
