Abstract
In 19.73 a large amount of biochemical and genetic work, dealing with mitochondria and chloroplasts, was once again published. From the genetic point of view, the mitochondrial system of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and the extrakaryotic systems of Chiamydomonas reinhardtii are of special interest, and progress in the study of organelle genetics has been made with these two organisms. As a survey with special emphasis on plastid inheritance was given by ARNOLD in Volume 35, this article will summarize the recent work on the genetics of mitochondria. The important problem of identifying the genes and products specified by the chloroplast and mitochondrial genomes in different organisms remains, but some further progress has been achieved. Cases of extrakaryotic inheritance, which cannot be attributed either to the mitochondrial or to the chloroplast system, are of considerable theoretical interest and might open entirely new perspectives.
