Zusammenfassung

Unter dem Begriff ›Christentum‹ werden für die Zwecke dieses Artikels alle Gruppen zusammengefasst, die (a) die historische Figur Jesus von Nazareth als ihren göttlichen Herrn anerkennen, das heißt in ihm eine alle Lebensbereiche bestimmende Macht sehen, (b) diese Verehrung ganz überwiegend in Gemeinschaft rituell zum Ausdruck bringen (Gottesdienst) und (c) hierfür institutionelle Formen ausbilden. Das bedeutet nicht, dass es in der Geschichte keine individualistischen, uninstitutionellen Formen des Christentums gegeben hätte; sie sind aber nicht in erheblicher Weise historisch wirksam geworden.
