Teil eines kosmopolitischen Projektes? Über mögliche Wege, einer ‚europäischen Identität‘ zu entkommen

Zusammenfassung

Wenn nach ‚europäischer Identität‘ gefragt wird, dann zumeist im Bemühen um eine solide Grundlage für die europäische Integration. In diesem Sinne sollte 1973 in einer Erklärung die gemeinsame Position der EG-Staaten in der Weltpolitik definiert werden. Sie war, wie andere Initiativen in Außenpolitik und Wertediskussion auch, wenig erfolgreich. Ihr Scheitern bedeutet aber nicht, dass es den Europäisierungsprozessen an Legitimität mangelt, sondern dass diese auf eine falsche Weise herbeigeführt werden soll. Übersetzt man aber ‚europäische Identität‘ in ‚Zugehörigkeit zu Europa‘, wird eine funktionierende kulturelle Integration sichtbar. Sie entzieht sich als Teil eines offenen kosmopolitischen Projektes Europas von vornherein einer Fixierung. Mit der Notwendigkeit einer ständigen Aushandlung von Grenzen und Zugehörigkeit, mit Mobilität und interkultureller Kommunikation bietet sie wichtige Themen für den Schulunterricht.
