Zusammenfassung
Die Suche nach den Ursachen und Kausalmechanismen erfolgreicher Übergänge von autokratischen zu demokratischen Herrschaftsformen steht im Mittelpunkt des Erkenntnisinteresses politikwissenschaftlicher Transitionsansätze. Ihre Entstehung ist eng mit dem Einsetzen der dritten Demokratisierungswelle in Lateinamerika und Südeuropa Mitte der siebziger Jahre des letzten Jahrhunderts sowie ihrem anschließenden Übergreifen auf Südostasien und die kommunistischen Regime Osteuropas verbunden. Die bis dahin vorherrschenden strukturalistischen und funktionalistischen Erklärungsmodelle, die sich ausgehend vom Ideal etablierter westlicher Demokratien auf die Identifizierung allgemeiner Requisiten (stabiler) demokratischer Herrschaft konzentrierten, erwiesen sich als zunehmend ungeeignet, den dynamischen und stets ergebnisoffenen Prozess des Regimewandels zu erfassen.
