Zusammenfassung

Der Zusammenhang von Demografie und Sicherheit hat seit jeher das politische und militärische Denken mitbestimmt (Weiner und Teitelbaum 2001). Im Zuge einer allgemein gestiegenen Aufmerksamkeit für die demografische Entwicklung hat das Thema zuletzt noch einmal an Bedeutung gewonnen: Während in den alternden, schrumpfenden Industriestaaten der Erhalt von wirtschaftlicher Leistungs- und Wettbewerbsfähigkeit, gesellschaftlichem Wohlstand und sicherheitspolitischer Handlungsfähigkeit in den Fokus rückt, sind viele Entwicklungsländer mit weiterhin hohen Wachstumsraten ihrer Bevölkerungen sowie daraus resultierenden Versorgungsproblemen und Konfliktrisiken konfrontiert (Eberstadt 2001; Demeny und McNicoll 2006).
